Boko Haram is your baby, Buhari fires back at Jonathan

ABUJA—Former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, slammed President Goodluck Jonathan, describing the virulent sect, Boko Haram, as a creation of the present administration.
President Jonathan, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe had on Tuesday challenged General Buhari to persuade members of the sect to accept dialogue as a means of ending the orgy of violence in the North.
General Buhari, who apparently was angered by the Presidency’s attempt to link him with the sect, asked Jonathan to leave him alone and find ways of resolving the Boko Haram crisis, which he said, was borne out of the failure of his government.

Buhari, who fired back at Jonathan through the National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, noted that it was wrong for the Presidency to accuse him of not calling Boko Haram to order when he did not have any relationship with the members.
He also faulted Okupe, for referring to Buhari’s presidential ambition as inordinate, saying that the attack was ill-motivated.
Fashakin said: “It is unfortunate that a presidential aide referred to the legitimate desire of a statesman as inordinate. Away from the uncouth posturing of Dr Okupe, it is apparent that this fellow is conflating two unrelated issues and scenarios.
“If the people that initiated and executed the Niger Delta problem decided to resolve it, what can anyone do about it? The Niger Delta problem is totally different from the Boko Haram palaver.
“General Muhammadu Buhari has consistently asserted that the political Boko Haram, the most virulent variant of the menace, is a creation of Jonathan’s regime. So why should a Buhari that did not understand the genesis of the funding and operation of this lethal unit of the PDP-led federal government, now join in appeasing them?
“That explains why the Jonathan regime cannot talk about amnesty for Boko Haram because it is akin to appeasing self. As a party, we strongly advise the Federal Government to come clean to the Nigerian people. The political Boko Haram is all about the Jonathan regime and no amount of carefully-woven spin can hoodwink discerning Nigerians,” the CPC spokesman declared.
Buhari’s statement followed Tuesday’s call on him by Jonathan’s spokesman, Doyin Okupe, to lead the talks with Boko Haram to lay down their arms and embrace dialogue as a means of ending the raging violence in the north, which has claimed many lives and property.
Okupe had also asked Buhari to emulate the role Jonathan played by going to meet militants in their vast hideouts in the Niger Delta to plead with them to lay down their arms and accept the general amnesty granted by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua on June 25, 2009.
Meanwhile, reactions have trailed the statements issued by both the Presidency and General Buhari.
It’s a ridiculous request —Musa
A Second Republic Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa described the president’s appeal to Buhari as an insult. The former governor said “this is an insult. How can Buhari ask Boko Haram to cease fire? Is Buhari responsible for Boko Haram? Is he the president of Nigeria? This is a ridiculous request and it amounts to some kind of insult. A security issue of this magnitude is being turned into a light matter.”
Request meant to entrap Buhari—Sagay
For constitutional lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay, the request by the president is meant to entrap the former Head of State. Sagay, said: “Is Buhari their representative? Is he the one sponsoring them? I don’t think that is fair. There is no indication whatsoever that Buhari has a link with Boko Haram. The request is meant to entrap Buhari and so, I don’t think it is fair.”
Jonathan should be tolerant— Afenifere
On its part, Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere enjoined President Jonathan to be tolerant. In a telephone chat with Vanguard, National Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Yinka Odumakin said: “It is for us to appreciate that the nation is faced with a serious crisis that may consume everybody and therefore, we must find a way to solve the problem.
Jonathan should vacate office if… — Junaid Mohammed
In his reaction to the face-off, SecondRepublic lawmaker, Dr Junaid Mohammed, said if the President cannot stand the heat, he should vacate office. Mohammed, in a telephone chat said: “As far as I am concerned, the truth should not be subordinate to anybody’s view and people must surely express their views and opinion on daily basis. So if Mr President cannot stand the heat, he should throw in the towel because whether he likes it or not, he should expect to be criticised.”
Boko Haram not Jonathan’s creation –Austin Opara
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Austin Opara said: “It is wrong for General Buhari to say Boko Haram is the creation of President Jonathan’s government. It is absolutely wrong for Buhari to accuse Mr President because we all live in this country and we all know Boko Haram did not start with this government.”
FG will offer amnesty if… — Maku
In a related development, Minister of Information Mr. Labaran Maku said the  amnesty being canvassed for Boko Haram could only be considered when the group opens up for dialogue and negotiation, insisting that amnesty could not be the first option when nobody had come out to discuss with the Federal Government.
Mr. Maku who stated this in a live programme on Channels Television explained that amnesty is usually an outcome of discussions and negotiations, whereby those being offered amnesty would accept it in principle with conditions attached.
According to him, nowhere in the world was amnesty offered unconditionally to a group that did not even come out to negotiate with the government.
“Amnesty could be part of the solution but can only come out of the process of dialogue and negotiations but offering it unconditionally is not known. How does the President and Commander-in-Chief announce amnesty without prior conversation, without prior negotiation, without agreeing on anything, what it would mean is that the President has given up and that’s a complete abdication,” he said.
He called on Nigerians, especially the political class not to politicize the call for amnesty but to treat it as an urgent matter of national security.
“Nigerians should not over-politicize this issue.  People continue to compare it with the Niger-Delta. We must not forget that amnesty in the Niger-Delta came after a series of discussions and negotiations led by leaders of the Niger Delta Region and the combatants in the creeks.
“It was after negotiations reached a certain point and there were commitments that the issue of amnesty came up.  It was not just offered without condition and negotiation, so I think politicians should allow this matter to be taken as a security and national issue and those looking for votes in 2015 should not unduly over-politicize this issue of amnesty,” he stated.

Bomb Explodes In Kano

Eyewitnesses said a bomb exploded on Zoo Road near a local pharmacy triggering panic in the area. However, a JTF source said there was no casualty recorded and that troops have already sealed the area.

Count Me Out Of Plot Against APC – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan today denied the allegation that he is involved in a clandestine move to deny the merger of several opposition political parties.
Speaking in Abuja through the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Mr. Jonathan said it was not true that he had given a directive to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to register the new party.
The response follows a story in the LEADERSHIP newspaper edition of today which claimed that Mr. Jonathan directed that the planned merger of some political parties should be frustrated and that some state governors have been put on 24 hour surveillance in that regard.
The presidential spokesman described the claim as false and mischievous, and that it runs against common sense in view of the presidents credentials as a “democrat” who has refused to interfere in the activities of other political parties and INEC.
While noting that the publication attributed its story to "presidential villa insiders", Okupe asserted that the President does not give unlawful directives and has nothing to fear about the proposed merger that will necessitate him planning anything against the business interest of opposition figures as claimed by the newspaper.
Okupe also frowned at the claim that the president was planning to raise the pump price of petroleum products when the same president has provided enough funds for fuel subsidy in the 2013 budget and recently stated unequivocally that he has no plans to increase fuel price or remove fuel subsidy.
He admonished journalists to avoid playing into the hands of “mischievous politicians” whose desire is to blackmail the president and score cheap political points at the expense of stability of the country.
At a press conference in Lagos on March 19, President Goodluck Jonathan indicated his readiness to raise gas prices again, but would first “discuss” with the public the easiest way to do so.
“We cannot continue to waste resources meant for a greater number of Nigerians to subsidize the affluent middle class, who are the main beneficiaries,” he said on that occasion.
In response, “OccupyNigeria” activists said they were ready to respond whenever Jonathan made such a move.
So far, Mr. Jonathan has failed to implement several reports dealing with corruption in the oil sector, and has maintained in office Petroleum Minister Diezani Allison-Madueke and other officials who have been repeatedly accused of corruption, self-enrichment and manipulation.

Kano: JTF Kills Boko Haram Suspect, Arrests Another

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Kano on Wednesday killed one Boko Haram suspect and arrested another in a gun duel.
The confrontation, which followed Monday’s killing of three policemen by members of the sect, took place in the Yankaba area of Hadejia road in the outskirts of the city.
JTF spokesman, Captain Ikedichi Iwehia, said the operation took place in three different locations: Wandabai, Gwamajja and Yankaba area, and confirmed the fatality and arrest.
On Monday in the Hadejia, the three policemen, who were having tea in a tea shop, were shot dead by the terrorists.
A source told SaharaReporters that men of the JTF stormed the three areas and cordoned them off.  Their action followed the receipt of information that a man who had just arrived from Maiduguri and was believed to be one of those who killed the policemen, was residing in the area.
It was in the process of a-house-to-house search by the security operatives that the deadly gun duel with the militants broke out, the source said.

"Why Buhari Can’t Be President Again"

Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman is former vice president, Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA), ex-Economic, Political and Security Adviser to General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua; Adviser on Politics and Economy to the former SGF, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed (Wazirin Jama’a); and member, National Executive Committee, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).
In this interview, he declared that President Goodluck Jonathan had failed the country. He also gave reasons General Muhammadu Buhari failed to win the 2007 and 2011 presidential elections. Excerpts:
Buhari cannot rule Nigeria again
You witnessed what happened during the Buhari regime and that was why Buhari was removed. People who had contracts with government and voluntarily executed the contracts were accused of corruption. We know all the black and white of award of contracts in most of the countries in Africa and even overseas.
What happened was not the business of Buhari to send the people to jail. I remember, Mallam Ishaku Rabiu in Kano was jailed too. Well, we wouldn’t call it jail; they were incarcerated unnecessarily without term, indefinitely. Some of them died from the complications, arising from such an action. Some, who had money, just paid to free themselves, not because the law said so, they paid because they didn’t want to remain there. Hypertension, stroke, diabetes, blood pressure, so many things killed most of those who remained there.
Buhari can be a good leader but he will never govern Nigeria again, for the singular act of incarceration of politicians without reason or cause; for the singular act of causing the reason of ultimate death or early death of most of the people he incarcerated. That is the reason he may never be president again.
The families of those people, who died have decided to connect with God permanently, seeking God’s mercies on their departed souls. You think those families will not make sure they spend all their earnings to make sure Buhari never becomes President of Nigeria again? It is their right to pray, we cannot stop them. But everybody should understand the issue of the law, its applications with the intention of bringing about good governance in Nigeria.
Accepted, Buhari was a dictator but since he was a dictator, he had no business analysing political processes and direction. That is why he too, under the political process, suffered. The reason Buhari has never succeeded is that people only use him as a launch pad to win elections into the National Assembly and other positions. Buhari was a die-hard dictator; he is the one, who convicted the drug carriers and the newspaper men, who exposed the truth.
Between Obasanjo and Buhari
There was a major difference between Buhari and Obasanjo. Buhari has respect for person; he could be rude, very rude but you cannot compare that with crudeness of Obasanjo. Obasanjo’s own is what we call divide and rule. A man, who never has regret for his mistakes. A man that can subject even himself to inconvenience in order to displease people. Buhari will never inconvenient himself, he will never.
Yet, he (Buhari) cannot be President of Nigeria again. Yea! It takes more than being a good person to be President of Nigeria, considering other factors, like human, ethnicity, religion, etc. Even though Buhari had this Decree 9 and incarcerated journalists, those were military days. We are not comparing Obasanjo’s military regime and Buhari’s military regime. We are comparing Buhari as a man and a leader and Obasanjo as somebody, who came to being a Head of State and later a president. It is a question of attitude and we need behaviour, responsibility and attitude in governance. Buhari has them. So, Obasanjo should retire to being a statesman. People like Buhari should be organisers, they should advise the next generation. The next generation is those there now.
In 2011 when I fought for Jonathan to become the President of Nigeria, I fought the Northern establishment. I had quarrel with the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF); I fought the former Heads of State because I wanted a regime change. I wanted those old people, who have been part of Nigeria’s leadership in the last 50 years to step down. The result of the last 50 years has not helped us. They were the ones who kicked the civilians away by their coups. Then the civilians and the soldiers who have been in the leadership platform in the last 50 years have not changed Nigeria, it is worst.
What are we witnessing today? Mindless public act of vandalism. Whether you call it Niger-Delta youth restiveness or you call it Boko Haram, whatever you call it, it is pushing us backward. You bring in foreign contractors to come and build your land and you kill them mindlessly, do you want us to go back to riding horses and donkeys? You want us to go back to farming with our hoes, not tractors again?
The Jonathan Presidency
He has a wrong team and a wrong group, whether as executive cabinet or as economic management team. From the week he set up his economic management team, I told Jonathan in the newspapers that these are people, who have conflict of interest in Nigeria’s economy and they will wreck the economy.
On the issue of excess crude account, if you have enough money, use it to develop. The result of the development will improve the economy. You should be able to get all elements of economy correctly, exportation and so many things will happen, industries will pick up, then we can start having a very strong exchange rate and interest rate.
We can never go beyond where we are standing with the kind of interest rate the Central Bank is operating.
The late Professor Sam Aluko did better than these people a hundred times better. These people are not good enough for our economy. They do not know anything other than the book they have read and how it is written in the textbook, both of them. They cannot help the Nigerian economy, because it is formula plug-in that they know. These people are people of letters, most of them have divided interests in Nigerian economy. It is not about books from Harvard, it is about common sense, responsibilities, what we should be doing.
Jonathan should ask himself, from the day he became acting president and these people came on board, what has happened? Has the economy changed? Has anything drastic happened? Nothing! Everybody is milking the cash cow. We need to sit down very well in Nigeria and ask ourselves, what is the way forward? That is where the PDP has failed. PDP is supposed to present economic blueprint for the country, as a party that produced the president. They ought to be injecting these things into the president’s working paper. Do they do it? The answer is no! They don’t even have a manifesto, if they do, they don’t respect it.
Jonathan beyond 2015
The people, who are against Jonathan are so much in his government that they will stop him from getting the correct people to lead him to the Promised Land. The government of today has enough people in the government to dissuade Jonathan from listening to the right people who can lead him to the Promised Land, because they have divided interests. Most of them are helping the , who want to come in to even start their government. Something is wrong.
The Yoruba say, Kokoro to n j’efo, inu efo lo ngbe, meaning, “the insect that is devouring the vegetable garden lives inside it.” The problems of Nigeria and Jonathan himself are inside Aso Rock, they are the kokoro. Jonathan’s problem is in Aso Rock.
Jonathan can use his performance between now and 2015 to convince Nigerians on his status. But I will tell you, even within the PDP, there are people, who want to make sure that Jonathan is disgraced out of office. Didn’t they do that to Yar’Adua?
Presidential pardon for former governor Dipreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State and others
Some people condemned Jonathan’s action but I will hasten to say, they are all wrong. The word pardon shows that the person has already been convicted and he has paid the price for the offences he was found to have committed. So Bulama, the former managing director of the Bank of the North and Alamieyeseigha have paid the price because they were convicted. They served their terms and nobody said we should ask for a pound of flesh.
Even the Bible and the Qur’an have cautioned us on the elements of pound of flesh. If Jonathan wakes up one day and announces pardon for them, we can quarrel about the procedure, not the pardon itself, because they served their terms. I will restrict the rest of my comments to the real thing, what is right and what is wrong. The issue of pardon has to do with prerogative of mercy, human kindness after the punishment. The punishment is there, if they had spent only one day there, they have already fallen from grace to grass and that is enough.
