Niger East: David Umaru emerges APC flagbearer

Barrister David Umaru

Former Niger State gubernatorial candidate under the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) Barrister David Umaru yesterday emerged the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the August 30 Niger East senatorial by-election.
Announcing the results in Minna, chairman of the APC state electoral committee, Inuwa Abdulkadir, said Barrister Umaru won the primary election of the party with 248 votes against his opponent Bala Adamu Kuta who polled 62 votes.
He said the exercise which saw 326 delegates voting from the nine local government councils that made up the zone was conducted free of rancour.
The Niger State APC had recently threatened to drag INEC to court if it failed to conduct the by-election on August 16 as earlier announced.
INEC however said the change of date became necessary due to logistics constraints.
Speaking on the outcome of the election, former governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Hon Abubakar Bawa Bwari who spoke to our reporter on phone expresses his happiness for the peaceful conduct of the primaries.
He said the outcome has shown how organised the party is in Niger state. He called on memebers of the party to remain focused in order to ensure that it clinches and defeated the PDP during the bye-election and all other subsequent elections in the state including the governorship election.
Another source, Yusuf Maigaskiya who was a delegate in the primaries informed our reporter that, another candidate,  lbrahim Yakubu who showed interest to participate in the primaries failed to purchase nomination form up till the time the primary election was conducted.
The APC candidate has contested for governorship election in Niger state on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party which is one of the parties that merged to form the opposition APC.
Umar has earlier according to Maigaskiya been persuaded by his political associates to drop his governorship ambition and join the senate race after the death of late senator Kuta.
